M. Chapoutier, Ermitage ‘L’Ermite’ Blanc Magnum

Tasting note from barrel (April 2020): L’Ermite white: with beautiful acidity and freshness, thanks to its protected spot on the upper reaches of the hill. Flavours flirt with noble vegetable notes and a hint of celery. But quickly caught up by notes of ground stones and graphite, and the minerality comes through quite remarkably. And all of this melts beautifully into an impression of salty frost, delivering a more airy type of Ermite. Quite remarkable!
At the top of a valley, facing due east and set back from the Les Bessards hillside, the L’Ermite White derives its extraordinary freshness and salinity from its position and its shallow granitic soils. The slow maturation afforded by the altitude and the gentle rising sun enables the Marsanne to develop a high level of complexity, a well-honed balance and fine notes of crushed pebbles.
M Chapoutier’s ‘Selections Parcellaires’ (Single Vineyard Selectons) are exceptional wines, born from a single plot. A celebration of terroir. Farmed biodynamically with the highest respect for the soil, the vines and the environment.
