“””This is a solid red with a compact, tight palate of black fruit and currants, as well as very pretty, powerful yet polished tannins. This shows finesse with structure.”” James Suckling 96-97 pts

Smith-Haut-Lafitte is one of the great success stories of Bordeaux in the last 30 years. The highly competitive Cathiard couple took over the ailing property in 1990 and have invested money, sweat and tears to create not one but two of the most exciting wines of the Bordeaux region. Smith produces red as well as white wine and it is hard to decide which is the better wine. 67ha are dedicated to red wine production with vines planted on a deep gravel plateau, hence the name Haut-Lafitte. Cabernet Sauvignon is dominant here at 55% but an important Merlot contribtion is made with 35%. 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot give important seasoning and spice.

No expense is spared at Smith-Haut-Lafitte and every decision taken revolves around the quality of the wine. Organic farming has been in place for many years. The estate also owns its own cooperage to manage the style of barrel it wants.”
