“Château Les Carmes Haut Brion was all but unheard of until it was sold to Patrice Pichet in 2010. Originally part of the Haut Brion estate, what is now the vineyard had been gift by Haut Brion’s owner to a group of friars in the 1500s. Pichet set about an agressive renovation programme with some of Bordeaux most innovative architecture providing the housing for its winemaking, designed by Philippe Starck.
Whilst the vineyard holdings are now 26ha only 6.4ha are used for making the grand vin. Unlike other plantings on the left bank and Pessac-Leognan 40% of the plantings are dedicated to Cabernet Franc, with plans to increase this to 50% over time.
The stratospheric rise to fame peaked in 2016 when the wine achieved 100 points for the second vintage in a row, establishing its name as one of the most investible wines in Bordeaux. Much of the success is down to the technical ability of estate director Gauillaume Pouthier, who was previously the winemaker for Chapoutier’s highly acclaimed single vineyard Ermitage project.”
